At some point homeowners have a broken air conditioners and they need to make a tough decision to scrap the old unit, and buy a new AC unit. Trouble is new air conditioner tend be quite expensive. So can repairs. So how does a homeowner decide whether to keep the existing air conditioner and make the necessary repairs or buy a new AC system.

Do another AC repair or bite the bullet and buy a new AC unit

There are hundreds of things that can go wrong with an air conditioning system. The good news is most of them are fixable. But at what cost. If your air conditioner is not working and you need a repair you may need to consider purchasing components and getting the job done as opposed to replacing the air conditioner. However be conscious that most new air conditioners come with at least a 5 year warranty and many come with a ten year warranty. If your AC needs repair and it’s under warranty even if it’s just a parts warranty the bill will be substantially less.

So where is the cut off? When does it make more sense to buy a new air conditioner as opposed to repair? Well for each individual this scenario might be different. But these are some pretty quick rules that might help you make that decision.

If you have multiple components fail at the same time on your air conditioner it might make more sense to replace it with a brand new one. The cost will only be fractionally more yet you will get a warranty for your troubles.

Add to that the potential for future repairs. Now I’m cautiously aware that every air conditioner at some point will need a repair. I don’t care what brand it is, it has moving parts and in all probability at some point we’ll need something done in the way of maintenance. The trick is to try and head those off. The way that we do that is we evaluate each component of the air conditioner. More specifically when we see how many amps a motor is using. UC amperage is a measure of heat and resistance. If the motor is sucking up a lot of resistance then in all probability it will need to be replaced at some point in the near future. This is a very common type of air conditioning repair that you will find.

If you need an AC repair and you call a licensed contractor to handle it be sure to ask them on the phone before you invite them out if they offer a complete evaluation of your AC system. This means they fixed the part that is causing the air conditioner to stop cooling as well as evaluate the other components to see how they are running and attempt to predict the lifespan of those parts.

Again, when one part is going bad it puts an added strain on other components. When that happens more than one component will fail and more than one component will be taxed to its limits. When that happens it is only a matter of time before a replacement is imminent.

If you have time it is a good idea to get several estimates for repair when considering replacing your air conditioner. You might find a price difference in excess of 500 to 1800 from one installer to another. No two air conditioning companies are going to be exactly the same on price.

There are many different brands of air conditioning systems, for example Amana, American Standard, Trane, York, Rheem, Goodman, Ameristar and Comfortmaker just to name a few.  The price will be different for each unit.  Do your research on the air conditioners to see what brand you are comfortable with buying.  When checking reviews remember that not everyone is going to be happy with every brand.
